Learning Curation Summary - assignment one final submission (#7)

Final thoughts, pulling it all together, assessing
and moving forward

Three months later, as I reflect upon my original thoughts, I realize how much I have learned.

Here is where I started in January 2018:

It is my goal through the Teacher Librarianship course I am taking to discuss and focus upon how I will work toward creating a vibrant and welcoming Library Learning Commons Community.

It's not all about the books, technology and system management software; it is also about people, relationship building and feeling safe and supported.

...and some thoughts now:

In order for the LLC to be a Welcoming Place, there are key points to consider:

  1. Consideration must be made to the "audience". Who are we trying to make feel welcome?
This is all about building relationships.
      • Let teachers and staff know what the LLC can offer...especially new teachers
      • Make connections with students. If students feel safe in the space and with you, they will trust you and visit the library on a regular basis.
      • Keep lines of communication with administration open.
      • Invite parents into LLC. Go to a PAC meeting. Make connections. Having parents on your side can go a very long way in advocating for the LLC

(Coffee and treats can go a long way)

  2. Think about the support you can offer. Know the curriculum and what specific teachers are working on. Offer to co-teach and collaborate wherever possible.
    • What sorts of resources are required?
    • Do teachers need specific sessions in order to learn how to use a certain program (an after school PowToons tutorial is often appreciated)?
    • Offer library training sessions to show students how to research, use a program or properly annotate.
    • Open up the LLC to various clubs (makerspace, book clubs, lego club).
    • Go to staff meetings armed with baskets of books available for sign out and slips of paper for book requests and suggestions.
    • Arrange for guest author visits and invite classes into the library.
    • Connect with public library and work with them wherever possible. Facilitate students getting Public Library cards, if possible.
    • Can a book fair be held in the library? (gives another reason for parents to see the library.
  3. Balance - don't break your back. Sometimes, others forget that TLs are there to help everyone in the school. While offering to help, don't lose sight of other things that need to be done (ie: administrative tasks). Otherwise, burn out may occur.

My essential question, revised:

I will focus on how I will work toward creating a vibrant and welcoming Library Learning Commons Community that is inclusive, supports the development of literacy and critical inquiry skills and is a safe place.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this course and know that it has made me think about my original essential question and many more on a regular basis. I feel armed with a new set of resources and I am excited.
